More Pictures from Colorful India

Motivation… What does that word mean to you? Do you plan for your day to do certain things but eventually cut back only because you’re not motivated? Or just that you’re plain tired of running the rat race and that you don’t want to plan anymore, you don’t want to go with the norm, you just want to take it as it comes?
Are you wondering what I’m bantering about – totally unrelated to food blogging?? Well, that is just how I’ve been feeling lately. Cooking, blogging, cleaning, working… :-) I’m just not up to it. Maybe it’s the weather. I just make something simple and totally non-inspiring to put on the table so my family can eat and not be hungry anymore. Besides, they don’t complain. They’re happy with pastas, stir fries, salads, frozen stuff, leftovers … anything works for my family. And not to mention, after my India trip, my weighing scale tipped 2 lbs over, thanks to all the mindless gorging I did at the sight of food. So, I’ve started to carefully watch what I eat, cut down on fat and carbs a little bit and get back into the exercise routine. You must be thinking I’m a fitness freak! Unfortunately far from that! I just know that once the weight creeps in, it’s very very hard to get it off! So nowadays it’s been simple, healthy meals at home. Before I go ahead to share with you guys one of our favorite Sunday morning breakfasts, I wanted to share some more India pictures (you must be thinking “Gosh this lady has been back almost a month, and now she decided to share them?) … Well, Better late than never right!

Nanjangud - A small town in Karnataka, close to Mysore, the hometown of the famous Nanjangud Shiva temple is popular for Ras Bale - a special variety of banana that has a sweet taste that lingers long after you've eaten the banana. The picture above shows stems of bananas hanging in a store that sells only bananas.

Onions and Potatoes anyone? I've never seen so many Onions and Potatoes in a long time! I was fascinated by the abundance of these roots in this stall! In return, the store keeper was fascinated that someone was taking his picture! If only he knew that it was the onions that attracted me :-)

Beautiful Fresh Flowers
Beautiful Fresh Flowers

One morning, I stepped out and I saw this huge basket of fresh flowers outside my house in Bangalore. The flowers were so fresh and beautiful. I ran in to get my camera. It was an early morning shot and the weather was perfect!. The whilte flowers are jasmine flowers - aromatic and beuatiful. The orange ones are called 'Kanakambra' in Kannada and Telugu - not sure what they're called in English. And the yellow ones are marigolds. All the flowers are weaved into garlands before being sold. This is the typical way that a vendor sells his flowers early morning in the neighbourhoods in Bangalore yelling 'Huvvu bekamma huvvu' which translates to "Flowers, Flowers for sale"...

And now here's a simple breakfast:

Onion Oothappam with Potato Curry
Onion Oothappam with Potato Curry

I usually make these with leftover Dosa batter. Chop red onions fine and set aside. Chop cilantro (coriander leaves) fine and set aside. You can even use grated carrots. Pour a ladle full of batter on a hot tava or pan and spread into a thick circular dosa. Sprinkle some chopped onions, grated carrots and cilantro. Drizzle some oil. Cook until the side being cooked is golden brown. Flip over and cook for a few minutes. Serve hot. Before sreving, sprinkle some red hot chutney powder and spoon some Potato Curry onto the Dosa. You can serve the oothapam with some coconut chutney as well.

Happy New Year and a Travelogue of my Trip.

Hi dear friends, A very Happy New Year to all of you. Hope this year brings with it lots of joy, peace to the world and plenty of prosperity with it.
I cannot believe that it is 2007, yet another new year, a new beginning! Time seems to fly. Just yesterday I remember posting my note about my short break since I was going to India and now I’m already back, unpacked and started the New year with a new job! Whew, too much too soon!
Well, anyway, we had a wonderful trip to India. The kids had a blast and hated coming back. Life was just one big party for a month. As for me, there was no cooking, no cleaning, no watching the kids etc. etc. I was pampered and spoilt! Wish it could have lasted! Good things always come to an end, don’t they??
We visited Bangalore mostly, my hometown. And then we went on short visits to Tirupati , Mysore and Nanjangud and then Chennai. We had a splendid time everywhere, good food and lovely company. The weather in Bangalore was a toasty 80’s during the day. No coats, no shoes, no gloves!
I was pretty diligent the first few days- I walked around everywhere with my camera trying to get some interesting pictures for my blog. But a few days later, I got caught up in all the fun and fast paced life that I forgot all about the pictures! Sorry guys! I do have some pictures though, interesting ones, ones that will surely make you guys nostalgic!

The above picture is a picture of a plate of Hot steaming Idli - Butti Idli. A typically traditional North Karnatka fare -where the idli is steamed in a butti or basket made from Patra or Leaves weaved together. The patra lends the idli a unique flavor and is delicious beyond comparison. This is usually served with coconut chutney and hot Sambar. Sorry for the almost gone Vada! I was too busy taking pictures of my daughters on the see-saw and my Dad had almost finished up the Vada!
