A Healthy Snack

On Sunday evenings, we are usually hungry for a snack. After a heavy brunch in the morning, I usually dont like to spend too much time in the kitchen on Sunday evenings. I try to whip up something quick. Last Sunday I made Guggullu with Black Eyed Peas. Guggullu is easy to make, tasty and is a comforting, nutritious snack.

For Black Eyed Peas Guggullu:
3 cups Black Eyed Peas (you can use Frozen black eyed peas. If using the dry variety, soak ahead for about 8 hours)
Salt to taste
For Seasoning:
Mustard seeds, Channa Dal, Urad dal, curry leaves, 1/2 chopped onion, chopped green chillies.
For Garnishing:
Chopped cilantro (coriander leaves), 1/2 tsp fresh lime juice and grated fresh coconut (optional).
Method:
Boil the black eyed peas in a pressure cooker with about 5 to 6 cups of water for 1 whistle. If you like it slightly mushier you can leave it on for 2 whistles. Drain the water and keep the cooked lentils aside.
In a pan heat 2 tsp of oil. Add the mustard seeds. After they splutter, add the dals and the curry leaves. Then add the chopped chillies and the chopped onions. Saute until onions are translucent. Then add the boiled black eyed peas, salt to taste and mix well. Add the lime juice and mix well. Then add chopped cilantro and grated coconut and serve hot.
A comforting, tasty evening snack is ready!

Hi Asha,
You're right we call it Usali in Kannada. :-)
And we do make it with moong too and pretty much many of the whole dals. I love these because they are full of protien and so easy to make.
Cheers

Hi Sharmi,
You're right. It is usually made with chickpeas or Whole moong. The typical temple Prasadam's in South India!
I just make it with any dal that is available! If you do try it let me know :-)
Cheers
